Hibiscus saponarius Craven

Species

Angiosperms > Malvales > Malvaceae > Hibiscus

Characteristics

Sprawling subshrub. Branchlets with very dense, straight, soft, whitish, 1–several-armed fine hairs (–3 mm long), minute glandular hairs, and fine, soft stellate hairs (1 mm long) in a longitudinal band on each internode. Stipules ± persistent, subulate, unlobed or 2-lobed, 4–7 mm long, with fine hairs like the branchlets and minute glandular hairs. Mature leaves: petiole 40–70 mm long, indumentum similar to the branchlet; lamina orbicular to depressed ovate, shallowly to deeply 3–5-lobed (more commonly 5-lobed on mid-stem leaves, lobes usually longer than wide) 45–85 mm long, 80–110 mm wide, cordate to cuneate base, serrate to serrate-sinuate margin, acute to obtuse apex, very weakly discolorous, indumentum similar on each surface, on the abaxial surface usually moderately dense to very dense fine hairs similar to branchlets but shorter, and minute glandular hairs, the midrib and primary vein indumentum similar to the interveinal regions or more dense on the major veins. Distal leaves reduced in shape and size, linear or 3-lobed. Foliar nectary usually absent. Flowers solitary in leaf axils, pedunculate, peduncle, pedicel, and epicalyx with moderately dense (very dense on pedicel) soft, fine hairs to 3 mm long; peduncle 10–38 mm long; pedicel 13–27 mm long; epicalyx, 9–11-segmented, the segments free at the base, straight or slightly recurved, linear, flattened, 3-veined, entire at the apex, 0.6–0.75 times the length of the calyx, 9–12 mm long; calyx 14–20 mm long, with hairs on the ribs, otherwise glabrous, nectary absent; petals 55–65 mm long, white with a suffusion of pink mainly on the veins on the abaxial side, and with the proximal region reddish; staminal column 12 mm long, stamens distributed along distal 10 mm of the column, filaments 1.5–2 mm long; style exserted 5 mm beyond apex of staminal column, branches 1 .5–2 mm long, stigmas hairs 0.5 mm long. Capsule 8–11 mm long, very sparsely hairy (few appressed hairs throughout), conspicuous beak 1 mm long. Seed angular, 3.5 mm long, striate very short, white, thick hairs.
