Species

Angiosperms > Malvales > Malvaceae > Hibiscus

Characteristics

Shrub to 2.5 m high. Branchlets with bristles (fine bristles very dense and coarse bristles sparse to moderately dense) and glandular hairs. Stipules at length caducous, subulate to very narrowly triangular, 5–9.5 mm long, can be lobed, with fine bristles. Mature leaves: petiole 2.5–10 mm long, indumentum dissimilar to branchlet; lamina ovate, broadly ovate or elliptic, unlobed to moderately 3-lobed (lobes as long as wide to shorter than wide), 100–120 mm long, 60–160 mm wide, truncate or cordate base, serrulate-serrate, serrate or crenate margin, acute to acuminate apex, discolourous, the indumentum similar on both surfaces, the abaxial surface with stellate hairs (very dense and coarse), fine bristles and glandular hairs, the indumentum denser on the veins. Distal leaves reduced in size and shape, narrowly elliptic. Foliar nectary on the petiole, 2–7 mm long. Flowers solitary in leaf axils or sympodial (in few-to several-flowered terminal and/or distal-axillary racemoid axes), pedunculate; peduncle 4–9 mm long, with very dense fine stellate hairs; pedicel 2–4 mm long in fruit, with stellate hairs; epicalyx with stellate hairs, 15–19-segmented, segments free at the base (or weakly connate), subulate and straight, 5-veined, 1.2–1.4 times the length of the calyx, 24–32 (–42) mm long in fruit; calyx 20–25 mm long in fruit, with very dense fine whitish stellate hairs, calyx nectaries absent; petals 7.5-9 mm long, pink; staminal column 28–29 mm long, stamens distributed evenly along the length of the column, filaments 1–2 mm long; style extends 3–4 mm beyond the apex of the staminal column, the branches 1–2 mm in length, stigmas capitate, stigmatic hairs 0.5–1 mm long. Capsule ovoid, 18–20 mm long, densely hairy, the hairs appressed, the beak 1 mm long. Seeds angular-subreniform, c. 4 mm long, striate and minutely pectinate-pubescent.
