Species

Angiosperms > Malvales > Malvaceae > Hibiscus

Characteristics

Shrub to 1 m high. Branchlets with stellate hairs (coarse, very sparse and 0.2–1.75 mm long), aculei (1.25–2.75 mm long), and glandular hairs. Stipules ± persistent, subulate or filiform, 7–12 mm long. Mature leaves: petiole 25–35 mm long, indumentum dissimilar to branchlet (in addition to aculei and coarse stellate hairs, a longitudinal band of fine stellate hairs is on the adaxial surface); lamina ovate, unlobed or shallowly 3-lobed (lobes longer than wide to as long as wide), 35–55 mm long, 25–35 mm wide, truncate base, serrate margin, acute to obtuse apex (the mid-lobe always is acute), concolorous, the indumentum similar on both surfaces, the abaxial surface with the midrib and primary vein indumentum dissimilar to the interveinal region (aculei and coarse stellate hairs on the veins only), with aculei (1–2.5 mm long), stellate hairs (sparse and coarse, 0.2–1 mm long) and glandular hairs. Distal leaves reduced in size, narrowly ovate. Foliar nectary at lamina base, 1–4 mm long. Flowers not seen but are sympodial in few-to several-flowered terminal and/or distal-axillary racemoid axes, not pedunculate; pedicel 18–32 mm long in fruit, with aculei (a few of these up to 4-branched); epicalyx with aculei, 12–13-segmented, segments free at the base, incurved, linear, obscurely 1-veined, c. 0.6 times the length of the calyx, 18–22 mm long in fruit; calyx 22–29 mm long in fruit, indumentum yellowish, stellate hairs (sparse) and aculei on the ribs and minute glandular hairs on the body of the calyx lobe (otherwise the calyx is glabrous), calyx nectaries absent. Capsule ovoid, 14–15 mm long, densely hairy, the hairs appressed, the beak c. 0.1 mm long. Seed angular-reniform, c. 4 mm long, striate but without pectinate scales.
