Hirpicium angustifolium (O.Hoffm.) Roessler

Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Hirpicium

Characteristics

Tufted, rush-like, scapose perennial without leafy stems (scape with 1–4 reduced leaves); rootstock woody with many secondary roots; root-crown densely long-hairy.. Leaves mostly basal, erect, arcuate, filiform-linear, basal ones 10–25 cm long, 1.5–3 mm wide, widening at membranous clasping base and tapering to acute apex, entire, usually revolute, glabrous or with scattered hairs above, especially towards apex, sometimes with raised dots (? hair bases), usually white-felted beneath, midrib with occasional 3 mm long setae; cauline leaves only 1–3 cm long, otherwise like the basal ones.. Scape 2.5–17 cm long, 2–5-bracteate, bracts up to 2.8 cm long, 1.5 mm wide, supporting a solitary capitulum, arachnose and/or long setose with long soft weak bristles.. Capitula showy, 1.6–4 cm diameter; involucre 4-seriate, of many phyllaries (± 23), these awl-shaped, very narrowly ovate to ovate, 6–12 mm long, 1.5–2 mm wide, setose and/or arachnose outside, with long hairs on margins at the base, the inner ones with broader hyaline margins, outermost phyllaries free, the rest partially united; receptacle alveolate, each pit surrounded by an irregularly toothed scarious wall, sometimes swollen beneath capitulum.. Ray florets yellow, obovate or broadly elliptic, tubular for 1/5–1/6 of their length, with 2–4 apical teeth, much exceeding the involucral bracts, 10–20 mm long, 1.5–4 mm wide, veins 5–8; outer surface of floret minutely papillose.. Disc florets bisexual, yellow, funnel-shaped, divided into 5–6 lobes for 1/3 or more of the floret length, lobes ± erect, linear, floret 5–7 mm long, glabrous or minutely pubescent.. Achenes (immature) densely hairy with hairs up to 4 mm long concealing the achene; pappus uniseriate, scales partially united, narrowly obovate, fimbriate, almost ciliate, 0.5–2 mm long.. Fig. 59/13.
More
Outermost phyllaries often free, extending briefly onto the capitulum stalk, the free portion of the fused outer phyllaries to c. 7 mm. long, triangular-subulate and ± spinose-ciliate on the margins or entire; free portion of inner phyllaries to c. 8 mm. long, c. 1.5 mm. wide at the base, narrowly triangular with a thick purplish midrib continued into a pungent apex, margins hyaline barbellate-denticulate.
Main leaves basal erect numerous, crowded, 10–30 cm. long, filiform-linear, entire, revolute except below, ciliate with bristles to c. 2.5 mm. long and most numerous near the leaf base, fewer or absent from the apical portion; upper surface sparsely scabridulous to glabrous, lower surface araneose-lanate except for the midrib.
Disk-floret corollas yellow, 4.5–5.5 mm. long; achenes c. 2 mm. long, obconic, somewhat viscid-glandular, densely sericeous with hairs equalling or exceeding the pappus; pappus scales uniseriate, brownish-hyaline, overlapping, 2.5–3 mm. long, oblong, fimbriate about the apex.
Stems annual, 1–3, purplish, usually simple, scapiform with 1–4 reduced leaves, ± araneose and also sparsely hispid with scattered brown or purplish weak bristles, especially towards the apex.
An erect tufted perennial herb 3–30 cm. tall, from a small rootstock; roots numerous, thong-like and somewhat fleshy; rootcrowns lanate.
Involucres 5–10 mm. in diam., obconic-campanulate; the connate part 3–7 x 4–7 mm., araneose, sometimes with a few small bristles.
Rays 15–20 mm. long, yellow, often brown or purplish outside, erect, flat and oblanceolate or margins inrolled.
Cauline leaves 1–3 cm. long, otherwise similar to the basal leaves.
Receptacle shallowly alveolate.
Capitula solitary and terminal.
