Perennial herb, up to 300 mm high. Leaves in a basal rosette; blade mostly linear, also narrowly obovate or pinnatifid, up to 100 x 4 mm, narrowed to petiole-like clasping base, lobes (when present) linear to narrowly elliptic, apices apiculate, margins revolute, upper surface harshly pubescent, lower surface white-felted. Heads radiate, solitary on nude peduncles, ciliate with long white hairs. Involucral bracts in many series, connate below to form cup, with long white hairs. Flowers: ray florets white or creamy on upper surface, purple band on lower surface; disc florets yellow; Oct.-Dec. Fruit with cypsela turbinate, ribbed, villous with long silky hairs. Pappus biseriate, outer of long, acuminate, fimbriate scales; inner of small, scale-like bristles.
