Characteristics

Leaves sessile, 1.5–6 x 0.2–1.0 cm., ± oblanceolate to linear, entire or irregularly and remotely toothed to lobed, leaf and lobe apices subacute white spinescent-mucronate, margins ± revolute with up to c. 8 patent white 2–4 mm. long bristles towards the base on each side; upper surface scabrous, very densely beset with conical white spinules; lower surface whitish lanate-tomentose except for the mid-nerve.

Involucres 10–15 mm. in diam., the connate part broadly obconic to hemispheric, lanate-tomentellous to scabridulous or glabrescent; outer phyllaries 4–7 mm. long, strap-shaped, spine-tipped and with 2–5 patent white spine-like bristles 1-2 mm. long on each side, the innermost series 4–8 x 2–3 mm., lanceolate, barbellate and often spinose-ciliate on the margins, scabridulous outside.
Disk-floret corollas yellow, 5–7 mm. long, deeply lobed; achenes 3–5 mm. long, tapering stipitate-turbinate, 10–12-ribbed, glandular, densely long-sericeous with hairs ± equalling the pappus; pappus scales 2-seriate, brownish hyaline, the outer ones 2.5–3.5 mm. long, oblong-elliptic, overlapping, the inner ones 2–2.5 mm. long, elliptic, stipitate.
Subshrub, up to 400 mm tall. Leaves oblong to linear-oblong, dentate or pinnatilobate, white-felted beneath; lower part of leaf margin with long white cilia. Margins of involucral bracts ciliate with short, stiff hairs. Flowers yellow.
Branches ascending, leafy, beset with scattered 0.5–2 mm. long patent white brisdes, sometimes sparsely lanate-araneose, not glandular-hairy, becoming woody below.
A bushy ± scabrous perennial herb, branching from the base, 10–40 cm. tall from a woody taproot.
Capitula terminal on branches, subsessile and usually subtended by 1–3 small leaves.
Rays yellow 8–20 x 1–3 mm., linear-oblanceolate.
