Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Hirpicium

Characteristics

Leaves mostly 2–8 x 0.5–1.5 cm., narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, sometimes ± linear, tapering into a cuneate or petiole-like base to c. 1.5 cm. long, entire to irregularly serrate-dentate or lobed, apex subobtuse mucronulate, margins ± revolute; upper surface scabrid, densely beset with conical spinules which grade into scattered conical-based spinose bristles up to 3 mm. long, the latter usually most numerous towards the leaf base and becoming somewhat pectinate-ciliate to c. 4 mm. long on the margins near the base; lower surface whitish or greyish lanate-tomentose except for the midrib.
More
Involucres 10–15 mm. in diam. increasing to c. 30 mm. when achenes are mature, the connate part broadly obconic to hemispheric, ± araneose-lanate; outer phyllaries with free portions 8–12 x c. 0.5 mm., linear, bristle-tipped, margins pectinately ciliate with 10–20 or more bristles 2–3 mm. long on each side; innermost phyllaries with free portions 6–13 mm. long, 2–3 mm. wide at the base, shortly triangular in the lower part and tapering-acuminate above, barbellate on the margins and sometimes pectinate-ciliate near the apex.
Disk-floret corollas yellow, to c. 6 mm. long, usually not or hardly overtopping the pappus scales of mature achenes, glabrous or somewhat puberulous not araneose; achenes 4–5 mm. long, narrowly obconic, 10–12-ribbed, glandular, densely long-sericeous, hairs shorter than pappus; pappus scales 2-seriate, brownish hyaline, the outer ones increasing to 5–6 mm. long (2–3 mm. long in subsp. aizoides), oblong-elliptic, overlapping, the inner ones c. 2.5 mm. long, oblong-ovate, stipitate.
Branches erect or decumbent, leafy, coarsely hispid, beset with scattered 1–2 mm. long patent conical-based bristles, also thinly araneose towards the apex.
Capitula terminal on branches, sessile and subtended by 3-several leaves which exceed the capitulum in length.
Rays yellow, 10–25 x 2–5 mm., linear-elliptic.
An annual scabridulous herb, 10–50 cm. tall.
Receptacle shallowly alveolate.
