Characteristics

Rhizomatous tufted perennial herbs. Roots fibrous. Leaves radical, terete, with sheathing bases; scale leaves present. Inflorescence an elongated raceme on a bracteate scape, with a small bract and bracteole below each flower. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Perianth segments 6, ±equal, 3-nerved, shortly united at base, spirally twisted after flowering. Stamens 3 opposite petals, alternating with 3 staminodes; stamen filaments short, kinked; staminodal filaments not kinked; anthers versatile, basifixed, dehiscing by slits, introrse, apiculate. Ovary superior, 3-locular; ovules 2 per locule; placentation axile; style filiform; stigma capitate, small. Fruit a loculicidal obovoid capsule. Seeds slightly pitted, arillate, black.
