Characteristics

Fruit indehiscent, more or less rectangular in cross section, with a broad parchment-like wing on each of the four edges, rotund to circular in lateral view; mesocarp not spongy; the veins of the wing forming a distinct, usually dark coloured network; c. 8 seeds in each loculus.

Leaves opposite, long petiolate; lamina subsucculent, circular to ovate, slightly lobed or sinuate, truncate or slightly cordate at the base, sparingly glandular below, glabrous above.
Flowers solitary, yellow-green to white; corolla tube cylindrical at the middle, funnel-shaped at the mouth, with a large basal sac-like spur; limb spreading, obscurely bilabiate.
Ovary bilocular, loculi undivided; ovules biseriate in each loculi, c. 8 in each loculi, ascending.
Erect annual (sometimes biennial) herb with spreading branches, 30–75 cm. tall with square stem.
Stamens 4, inserted low down in the corolla tube; thecae divergent.
