Characteristics

Trees. Leaves coriaceous or subcoriaceous, entire or dentate. Inflorescence axillary or pseudoterminal, paniculate, mostly with trichotomous or dichotomous branching, the bracts persistent or deciduous. Flowers with sepals suborbicular, imbricate, united at base; petals free, thick-membranaceous, linear or oblong; stamens 20, in 2 alternating lengths, glabrous, the anthers ovate-lanceolate or oblong, attached near base, the thecae 2, unilocular, basal, the connective thick, acute at apex; disc a dentate ring or composed of more or less free scales; carpels opposite sepals, ovary 5-locular, the cells uniovulate, the style short, the stigma capitate-lobate. Fruit a medium-sized or small drupe, ellipsoid or subglobose, smooth, the endocarp woody, usually with resinous cavities, 5 foramina around apex and 5 oblong germinal valves on upper half; seeds oblong, usually 1-2 per fruit.
