Characteristics

Glabrous tree. Leaves subovate-elliptic-oblong or elliptic, abruptly narrowly caudate-acuminate, rounded at the base, slightly inequilateral, subcoriaceous, shining, entire, 12½-17 by 6.5-8.5 cm; nerves curved-ascending and little prominent on both sides, veins distinctly and densely reticulate. ♂ Flowers: peduncle rusty-tomentose, 1-1.5 cm; pedicels c. 1.8 cm. Sepals oblong-elliptic, obtuse, rusty-velvety outside, greyish-puberulous inside, 8-9 by 4 mm. Petals glabrous, purpurascent when dry, 8-9 by 3 mm; scales linear, 5 by 1 mm, ciliate. Filaments conical, 2 mm; anthers oblong, 4 mm. ♀ Flowers: solitary, rarely 2. Sepals and petals similar to those of the ♂ flowers, but slightly larger. Pedicel stout, 2-3 mm. Ovary ovoid, sub-cylindrically attenuate in the upper part, yellowish or greyish-tomentose, slightly 5-ribbed. Fruit ovoid, rather glabrous, with 5 longitudinal ribs, 3(-5) by 2.5 cm. Seeds 2-5, 1.5 by 1.25 cm.
