Decumbent or creeping herb 15–45 cm. long, with ± erect flowering shoots; rhizome creeping; stems often rooting along the internodes, glabrous to ± adpressed hairy.. Leaf-blades oblong, oblong-obovate, oblanceolate or ± elliptic to rhombic, 1.7–10 cm. long, 1.1–4.4 cm. wide, acute to usually rounded at the apex, narrowed to a rounded or minutely cordate base, glabrous or obscurely pustulate above, mostly densely shortly hairy beneath, particularly on the venation, or even velvety when young (glabrous except for sparsely pubescent nerves in var. rhombicifolius); venation mostly very distinctly reticulate, often impressed above; petiole 0.3–1.1 cm. long, glabrous to hairy; stipules triangular, 5 mm. long, distinctly bifid.. Inflorescences subsessile or shortly pedunculate, 1 cm. in diameter, several-flowered; peduncles 0–5 cm. long; bracts not evident; flowers conspicuously heterostylous..
