Shrub or small tree (1.5–)4–9 m. tall, with grey-black usually rough flaking reticulate bark; branchlets glabrous or pubescent.. Leaves turning scarlet or crimson before falling; leaf-blades elliptic to obovate, 5–18 cm. long, 2–11.5 cm. wide, abruptly acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, glabrous above and beneath save around the acarodomatia in the axils of the main nerves or puberulous to quite densely tomentose beneath in some forms; venation reticulate beneath; petiole 0.4–4 cm. long, glabrous to pubescent; stipules triangular to lanceolate or strap-shaped, 0.8–1.2 cm. long, acute, often bifid, usually with glandular margins but otherwise glabrous.. Inflorescences terminal, cylindrical, dense, raceme-like, 6–22 cm. long, 2.5–3 cm. wide; peduncle 0.5–6 cm. long, glabrous to densely pubescent as are the rachis and pedicels; pedicels 2(–9 in fruit) mm. long; main petiolate bracts at the base of the inflorescence yellowish green to red, elliptic-lanceolate, 3.5–10 cm. long, 1.1 –3.2 cm. wide, acute, rather rigid and strongly reticulate; petiole 2–5 cm. long; secondary bracts linear-lanceolate, 5 mm. long, 0.5 mm. wide; flowers sweet-scented.. Calyx-tube hairy, 1.5 mm. long; lobes 5–6 narrowly ovate, linear or triangular, ± 0.5–1 mm. long, puberulous.. Corolla red, yellowish red or greenish yellow tinged purplish brown; tube 4–7 mm. long; lobes 5–6, short, narrowly ovate or triangular, 0.8 mm. long and wide.. Style cream, tinged red, 0.8–1 cm. long, exserted 2.5–6 mm.; stigma greenish, 0.8–1 mm. long.. Capsule brownish with pale lenticels, 1–1.5 cm. long, 4–7 mm. wide.. Seeds pale brownish straw-coloured with darker nucleus, very compressed, 0.7–1 cm. long, 2.5–4 mm. wide, the nucleus 2–2.5 mm. long, 1–1.5 mm. wide, the wing, markedly bifid at the base, the testa strongly reticulate..
