Characteristics

A palm. The trunk is fattened or bottle shaped. It is grey and has close rings. It grows to about 6 m high. It can be 70 cm across at the base and taper to 10-30 cm across. The fronds are dark green and have a twist along their length. The crown normally has only 4-6 fronds. The crown-shaft is smooth, green and waxy. The leaves are 1-2 m long. The leaf stalk is arched. The leaflets are greyish-green and taper towards the tip. The leaflets are in two ranks directed forward. The flowering stalk arises below the crown-shaft. They start pointing upwards but are branched and spreading when open. The stalk is stiff and thick. The flowers are small and cream. There are many flowers. The fruit are round or oval and 20 mm long by 10-12 mm across. They are smooth and orange to black when ripe.
