Characteristics

Leaves paired along branches or sometimes tending to be borne near apex of stems but not congested; blades 3.5–9 × 1.8–4.5 cm, elliptic to broadly elliptic, obtuse to acute or sometimes subacuminate at apex often apiculate, acute to cuneate at base, stiffly papery to subcoriaceous, occasionally pubescent beneath, drying brown; lateral nerves sometimes impressed above and tertiary nerves obscure; petiole 3–10 mm long; stipules 6–8 mm long.

Small shrub, 2–5 m tall; spines present or absent, patent or rarely recurved, frequently developed into lateral branches; brachyblasts between spines and leaf scars not recorded; young branches with grey or light brown bark.
Flowers 5(6)-merous, borne in one axil of penultimate node of lateral branches in 1–2(3)-flowered peduncles; peduncles 2–8 mm long; pedicels up to 2 mm long; bracteoles 2–4.5 mm long, ovate, acuminate, ciliate.
Corolla white; tube 2–4 cm long, covered with short appressed hairs outside; lobes 2–2.8 × 0.9–1.2 cm, elliptic to broadly elliptic, acute or sometimes acuminate, with short appressed hairs on both surfaces.
Calyx tube 4 mm long glabrous or pubescent; limb 5–8 mm long, divided into ciliate teeth near apex or rarely with linear teeth 5 mm long, glabrous outside, pubescent for most of length inside.
Fruit 2.5 × 1.1–1.2 cm, ellipsoid or fusiform; calyx limb persistent.
Seeds 2.25 × 1.5 × 0.5–1 mm, ± oval, flattened, reddish-brown.
Pollen presenter c. 5 mm, apex level with corolla throat.
Style slightly shorter than corolla tube.
