Perennial herb to 0.3–1.5(–2.4) m high; rhizome short, creeping, with spreading fleshy roots; young stem sparsely pubescent, with opposite branches in upper part or simple.. Leaves sessile or nearly so, narrowly ovate, 1–18 cm long, 1–6 cm wide, the lowermost and uppermost smaller, base cordate to sub-auriculate and semi-amplexicaul with the leaf-bases connate, margins entire or undulate, scabrid, apex obtuse or acute, glabrous or sparsely puberulous, punctate.. Capitula 3–21 in terminal cymes, hemispherical; involucre 10–13 mm long; phyllaries spreading, pale green and purplish, ovate, elliptic or lanceolate, 4–13 mm long, glabrous but for the ciliate margins.. Florets bright orange-red or red; corolla 10–12 mm long, glabrous or with pubescent base.. Achenes narrowly turbinate, (4.5–)6–7 mm long, densely hairy; pappus of setae 5–10 mm long, winged and hairy at base, apex straight or hooked.
