Characteristics

Leaves 4–11, ternate, ± conduplicate, arching, ± fleshy, sometimes pseudopetiolate late in the season, up to 45(55) × 2–5.5(7) cm, broadly elliptic or ovate-lanceolate at first, becoming narrowly lanceolate, with numerous raised longitudinal veins, lamina ± densely tomentose with golden-or reddish-brown hairs on both surfaces often ± glabrescent above, the hairs longer on leaf margins and midrib beneath; indumentum of patent 3–6-armed (stellate) hairs, up to 13-armed on the margins and midrib, the arms unequal.

Scapes 1–9, up to 30 cm long, flattened in cross-section and widening to c. 4 mm in the upper part, 2–3 mm wide in the lower part, width reducing in steps as pedicels diverge, ± densely tufted-tomentose in the upper part with patent 3–9-armed (stellate) hairs up to c. 5 mm long.
Perianth 26–30 mm in diameter when open; tepals 12–15 × 5–9 mm, the inner tepals wider than the outer with the margins ± inrolled in the upper part, reddish-brown pilose-pubescent to tomentose outside.
Seeds greyish-brown, 1.5–1.9 mm in diameter, ovoid; testa papillose, each papilla with a minutely wrinkled cuticle and 3–4 longitudinal narrow wing-like ribs.
Flowers 2–17, ± densely racemosely arranged; pedicels 7–12 mm long; bracts 10–20 mm long, subulate, exceeding the pedicels.
Rhizome vertical, 3–5.5 cm long and 3.3–4.5(6) cm in diameter, subglobose, equatorially ringed by stout contractile roots.
Capsule 4.5–6 × 3.5–5 mm, excluding the persistent perianth, turbinate to hemispheric, circumscissile.
Style 1.3–2.5 mm long; stigma 2.1–2.3 mm long, narrowly pyramidal.
Robust, hispid-tomentose perennial herb up to 45 cm tall.
Filaments 1.9–5 mm long; thecae 3.6–6 mm long.
