Characteristics

Leaves 4–8, ternate, ± conduplicate, arching when mature, sessile, up to 40(58) × 2–8 cm, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate or narrowly elliptic, with numerous spaced longitudinal veins ± pronounced when dry, glabrous on the lamina faces but the margins and abaxial midrib with a tufted-hispid fringe; the hairs up to c. 1.5 mm long, 3–12-armed (stellate), patent or spreading, mostly golden-brown.

Scapes 1–10, stout, narrowly to broadly strap-shaped, up to 27 cm long, flattened in cross-section and widening in the upper part to 2.5–4 mm wide or occasionally up to 8 mm wide, width reducing in steps as pedicels diverge, tufted pilose-pubescent to ± hispid-tomentose in the upper part with 3–10-armed (stellate) hairs, the arms 0.6–2 mm long.
Perianth 22–35 mm in diameter when open; tepals 12–21 mm long and 4–7(8) mm broad, narrowly ovate-lanceolate, the inner tepals wider than the outer, tufted golden-brown pilose-pubescent or hispid outside, the hairs 3–10-armed (stellate) with 1–2 arms up to 3 mm long and the others greatly reduced.
Flowers 6–12, in a cylindrical racemose arrangement 5–12 cm long; pedicels 2–16 mm long, ascending; bracts 9–18 mm long, subulate-lanceolate, exceeding the pedicels.
Seeds greyish-brown, 1.6–1.8 mm in diameter; testa papillose, each papilla with a minutely wrinkled cuticle and 3–4 longitudinal narrow wing-like ribs.
Rhizome vertical, 2–5 cm long, 1.4–4.5 cm in diameter, subglobose to hemispheric, equatorially ringed by stout contractile roots.
Capsule 5.3–9 × 3–5 mm, excluding the persistent perianth, turbinate-obconic, circumscissile.
Style 2.1–2.7 mm long; stigma 1.8–2.1 mm long, narrowly pyramidal.
Robust, perennial herb up to c. 36(40) cm tall.
