Characteristics

Perennial herb, 40-80 mm high; dwarf, delicate, growing singly. Rhizome oblong, 50-100 mm in diameter. Leaves 3-5, wrapped at base in a membranous, white or brown tunic, radiating irregularly from rhizome; blade lanceolate, membranous, 15-70(-90) x 5-10 mm; veins flush with surface; sparsely hairy throughout; hairs a mixture of simple, biramous or stellate, white. Flowers: inflorescence 1(-3) per plant, 1-flowered, appearing with leaves; pedicels, long, weak, 30-40 x 0.5 mm; perianth segments 2-7 x 1.5-2.5 mm, ovate-elliptic, yellow or white; Nov.-Apr. Fruit a capsule, 3-4 x 2-3 mm, opening by a circular slit, splitting longitudinally into 3 lobes.
