Characteristics

Annual herb; stems several from the base, simple or branched below, erect, 15-150 mm high, with thin skin-like indumentum, glabrescent. Primary leaves c. 8-13 x 0.5-1 mm, linear-filiform, sometimes twisted, acute and mucronulate at the apex, broad and semi-amplexicaul at the base, margins strongly inrolled, white-tomentose above, with a thin papery indumentum below; secondary leaves similar but much shorter. Heads campanulate, c. 3 x 2 mm, 3 or few in leafy cymose clusters in the axils of the primary leaves and together forming a long raceme.involucral bracts, and those subtending the female flowers, as well as those surrounding the pseudohermaphrodite, acuminate, more or less opaque, golden-brown or whitish sometimes tinged red, glabrous. Flowers 23-28; 18-23 female with filiform corollas, 3-6 hermaphrodite with cylindric corollas. Achenes 0.75 mm long, obovate in outline, lightly 3-angled, clad with minute globose hairs; ovaries of hermaphrodite flowers aborted. Pappus absent on female flowers; on hermaphrodite flowers with setae shortly plumose at the tips, scabridulous or nude in the middle, with minute spreading cilia at the base or (when setae reduced in number) smooth; occasionally pappus absent.

Flowerheads disciform, few together in leaf axils; involucral bracts acuminate, golden-brown or whitish, occasionally tinged red, glabrous; outer female florets filiform, 18-23; bisexual florets 3-6, with sterile ovaries. Cypselas of female florets obovate, triangular, minutely hairy; pappus in female florets absent, in bisexual florets of bristles with scabrid or nude shaft and plumose tips, occasionally absent.
Like I. glomerata but ovaries of hermaphrodite flowers aborted.
