Characteristics

Trees evergreen, ca. 10 m tall. Young branchlets black-brown, robust, angular, sulcate, glabrous; leaf scars subcircular, slightly convex; older branchlets subterete; lenticels elliptic, convex; terminal buds large, scales ovate-elliptic, 8-12 × 5-6 mm, densely long ciliate. Petiole 1.5-3 cm, stout, glabrous; leaf blade elliptic, 12-16 × 4-6 cm, papery to leathery, midvein abaxially densely yellow tomentose or glabrous, adaxially flat on distal half to impressed on proximal half, lateral veins 14-18 pairs, and reticulate veins evident on both surfaces, base rounded, obtuse, or broadly cuneate, margin serrate or crenate-serrate, rarely subentire, apex acuminate. Flowers not known. Infructescences: cymes, 1-3-fruited, solitary, axillary on current year’s branchlets; peduncles 3-6(-10) mm, compressed, apically thickening, glabrous; fruiting pedicels 5-8 mm, glabrous. Fruit red, globose, 6-7 mm in diam.; persistent calyx explanate, 5-or 6-lobed, lobes deltoid-ovate, ciliate; persistent stigma thickly discoid, shallowly 4-6-lobed; pyrenes 5 or 7, oblong, ca. 5.5 mm, ca. 2.5 mm in diam., abaxially slightly concave at base, not sulcate, sometimes flat or sulcate, endocarp leathery. Fl. unknown, fr. Jun-Jul.
