Characteristics

Plants annual, 40-50 cm tall, subglabrous or sparsely pilose. Stem erect, lower part often naked, upper part simple or shortly branched. Leaves alternate; petiole short, 3-5 mm, stout; leaf blade gray-green abaxially, green adaxially, narrowly lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, (5-)8-11 × (1-)1.5-3 cm, rigidly papery, midvein and lateral veins conspicuous abaxially, lateral veins 7 or 8 pairs, curved, base broadly cuneate or subrounded, margin inconspicuously serrulate, teeth mucronulate, apex acute or acuminate. Inflorescences in upper leaf axils, 2-flowered; peduncles spreading or ± recurved, shorter than leaves, 6-7 cm. Pedicels 1.5-2 cm, slender, bracteate at base (but appearing as if at middle in upper flowers); bracts persistent, ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate, 2-3 mm. Flowers white, purple spotted, 3.5-4 cm deep. Lateral sepals 2, broadly ovate-orbicular, 6-7 × ca. 4 mm, subleathery when dry, base inequilateral, apex obtuse, mucronulate, midvein not thickened, 5-or 6-veined. Lower sepal funnelform, ca. 1.6 cm deep, abruptly narrowed into an involute spur 1.5-1.8 cm deep; mouth ca. 1.4 cm wide, tip acuminate. Upper petal suborbicular, ca. 1 × 0.8 cm, apex curved rostellate, abaxial midvein thickened, green carinate; lateral united petals ± clawed, 2-2.2 cm, 2-lobed; basal lobes ovate-oblong; distal lobes dolabriform, longer, apex acute; auricle inflexed, subovate. Filaments linear, 4-5 mm; anthers ovoid, apex acute. Ovary fusiform, 3-4 mm. Capsule linear, 3-3.5 cm. Fl. Aug-Sep.
