Characteristics

Plants annual, 30-40 cm tall. Stem erect, succulent, simple or rarely branched, glabrous. Leaves often crowded in upper part of stem, alternate; petiole 1-3.5 cm; leaf blade pale green abaxially, dark green adaxially, oblong-ovate or lanceolate, 2-11 × 2.5-4.5 cm, membranous, with few glands near base, setose between teeth, abaxially glabrous, adaxially sparsely white adpressed hairy, lateral veins 5 or 6 pairs, curved, base cuneate, attenuate into petiole, margin crenate, apex acuminate. Inflorescences in upper leaf axils, 1-or 2-flowered; peduncles longer than petioles, 3.5-6 cm. Pedicel 1-1.5 cm, bracteate at base (but appearing as if at middle); bracts persistent, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, 3-4 mm. Flowers reddish, large, 3.5-4 cm deep. Lateral sepals 2, green, obliquely ovate or suborbicular, 8-10 × 5-6 mm, abaxial midvein not thickened. Lower sepal funnelform, limb ca. 1.5 cm deep, abruptly narrowed into an involute or incurved spur; spur pink striate, 2-2.5 cm; mouth vertical, ca. 1.5 cm wide, tip mucronulate. Upper petal cucullate, orbicular, 0.7-1.2 cm, abaxial midvein thickened, narrowly carinate; lateral united petals shortly clawed, ca. 2.5 cm, 2-lobed; basal lobes suborbicular; distal lobes oblong, longer, apex obtuse; auricle conspicuous. Filaments linear, apex dilated; anthers ovoid, apex obtuse. Ovary erect, fusiform. Capsule lanceolate, 1.5-2 cm. Fl. Oct-Dec.
