Species

Angiosperms > Ericales > Balsaminaceae > Impatiens

Characteristics

Perennial herb to 3.5 m. tall, though generally 0.5–1.5 m.; stems erect becoming somewhat woody and leafless below, simple or moderately branched, finely pubescent, especially when young, or glabrous.. Leaves spirally arranged; petiole 0.5–5.2 cm. long, slender, glabrous or finely pubescent; lamina ovate to lanceolate, lanceolate-oblong or broadly elliptic, 3.5–20 cm. long, 2.2–8.5 cm. broad, the base subrounded to attenuate, the apex acute to acuminate, finely pubescent or glabrous above and beneath; lateral veins 5–11 pairs; margin crenate or rarely serrulate, with several ± 1–2 mm. long fimbriae towards the base of the lamina.. Flowers axillary, solitary or in fascicles of 2–3, epedunculate, mauve, pink or deep rose with a whitish spur.. Bracts linear-subulate, 2–4 mm. long, inconspicuous.. Pedicels 3.5–7.5 cm. long, slender, glabrous or sparsely pubescent.. Lateral sepals 2, lanceolate-oblong, 4–8 mm. long, 1–3.5 mm. broad, glabrous.. Lower sepal shallowly and rather obliquely navicular, 10–16 mm. long, abruptly constricted into a 30–48 mm. long, curved filiform spur, generally with a few scattered hairs.. Dorsal petal obovate or suborbicular, emarginate, 10–19 mm. long, 10–24 mm. broad, dorsally with a shallow crest terminating in a short acute point.. Lateral united petals 14–25 mm. long; upper petal of each pair elliptic-reniform to reniform-oblanceolate, 10–26 mm. long, 6–13 mm. broad, entire, often with a short apiculum at the end; lower petal transversely semi-elliptic or obovate, 11–21 mm. long, 5–16 mm. broad, entire and with a short apiculum near or at the end, or with a small emargination along the inner margin about three quarters the distance from the base of the petal.. Ovary glabrous.. Fruit unknown.
More
Leaves spirally arranged, petiolate, sometimes crowded towards the apex of the branches and stems; lamina 4–9·5 × 2·5–4·5 cm., ovate to ovate-oblong or narrowly elliptic, thinly membranous, bright green on the upper surface, greyish-green on the lower one, glabrous on the upper, sometimes pilose (mainly on the nerves) on the lower surface, apex acute and often acuminate, margin crenulate-denticulate, ciliolate towards the base, base cuneate; secondary nerves 6–8 pairs, somewhat prominent beneath; petiole 1–3 (4–5) cm. long, usually glabrous.
Lateral sepals up to 8 × 3·5 mm., ovate-oblong to oblong, acute and finely acuminate, glabrous; posterior sepal c. 11 mm. long, obliquely funnel-shaped, gradually constricted into the spur, distally acute to subcaudate, glabrous; spur up to 35 mm. long, strongly incurved to nearly recurved, rather slender, conical in the upper, subcylindric in the lower half, with the end slightly thickened, glabrous.
Lateral united petals 17–20 mm. long, deeply 2-lobed, the lobes in a characteristic position, their axes forming (? always) an angle of c. 90°, glabrous; anterior lobe up to 18 mm. long and up to 10 mm. high, transversely semi-elliptic, entire; posterior lobe similar to the anterior one but usually a little longer and somewhat narrower (see t. 26 fig. 12).
Flowers axillary, solitary, colour not properly known (pale pink or mauve?); bracts very small, lanceolate-triangular, acute, glabrous or sparsely pilose; pedicels up to 6 cm. long, rather slender, glabrous.
Erect or semi-prostrate perennial herb, up to 70 cm. high or more; stem simple or branched, sparsely pilose on younger parts, but soon glabrescent, succulent, often with a woody base.
Anterior petal c. 11–14 mm. high and up to 12 mm. broad (when flattened), dorsally cristate, the crest terminating in an acute point, glabrous.
Capsule not known in a mature state, glabrous.
Ovary glabrous.
