Characteristics

Plants perennial, 30-60 cm tall, glabrous. Stem robust, branched. Leaves alternate, subsessile; leaf blade pale green abaxially, dark green adaxially, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 5-7 × 2.5-3 cm, rigid, lateral veins 6 or 7 pairs, base cuneate, attenuate into petiole, margin serrate, teeth mucronulate, apex shortly acuminate. Inflorescences in upper leaf axils, 1-or 2-flowered; peduncles fibrous, ca. as long as leaves. Pedicels ca. 1 cm, slender, bracteate at base (but appearing as if at middle in upper flowers); bracts persistent, lanceolate, very small. Flowers pale violet or purple-violet, 3-5 cm. Lateral sepals 2, ovate-falcate, ca. 7 mm, 5-veined, inequilateral, apex acuminate. Lower sepal funnelform, ca. 2 cm deep, gradually narrowed into an incurved spur; mouth vertical, ca. 1.5 cm, tip cuspidate. Upper petal orbicular, ca. 1.3 cm in diam., abaxial midvein thickened, with stout, ascending horn at upper middle; lateral united petals ± clawed, ca. 2.5 cm, 2-lobed; basal lobes broadly orbicular; distal lobes recurved, narrowly dolabriform, longer; auricle rounded. Filaments linear, short; anthers ovoid, apex acuminate. Ovary erect, fusiform. Capsule striate, fusiform, ca. 1.4 cm. Seeds few, dark brown, subglobose, ca. 3.5 mm in diam., tuberculate. Fl. and fr. unknown.
