Characteristics

Leaves spirally arranged, petiolate to subsessile; lamina (3·5) 4–13 × (1·5) 1·8–4 cm., lanceolate-oblong or ovate-lanceolate to elliptic, membranous to subchartaceous, bright to medium green on the upper surface, greyish-green to glaucous on the lower one, shortly pilose on both surfaces, more densely on the lower one with an increasing density towards the base, usually glabrescent when older, sometimes glabrous on both surfaces, apex subobtuse to acute, often acuminate, margin crenulate-denticulate to serrate, base cuneate or rarely rounded; secondary nerves 7–10 pairs, somewhat prominent beneath; petiole up to 1 cm. long, canaliculate, usually pilose or glabrescent or glabrous.

Lateral sepals 4–5 × 1·75–2·5 mm., broadly lanceolate-triangular, acute or finely acuminate, glabrous or sparsely pilose; posterior sepal 8–11 mm. long and c. 2·5 mm. deep (excluding the spur), shallowly obliquely navicular, abruptly constricted into the spur, distally acute or subcaudate (purplish-vittate ?) somewhat pilose mainly towards the keel-line; spur up to 25 (30) mm. long, slightly incurved, slender, tapering into a bluntish (rarely slightly thickened) end, usually pilose, very rarely glabrous.
Anterior petal 8–10 mm. long and up to 10 mm. broad (when flattened), helmet-shaped, dorsally distinctly cristate, with the crest terminating in a sharp point, usually pilose on the crest; lateral pair of united petals 18–22 mm. long, deeply 2-lobed, usually glabrous; anterior lobe 12–17 × 7–10 mm., transversely broadly semi-elliptic, entire; posterior lobe c. 1/3 the size of the anterior one (rarely smaller), obovate to oblong (see t. 26 fig. 14).
Flowers axillary, solitary or in bundles of 2–3, pale mauve or pink; bracts very small, lanceolate-triangular or subulate, tapering into a fine point; pedicels 2–6 cm. long, very slender, pilose or glabrous.
Usually prostrate, sometimes erect perennial (?) herb; stems up to 180 cm. long or more, rooting at the lower nodes, red, pilose on younger usually glabrescent on older parts.
Capsule not seen in a mature state, pilose or glabrescent.
Ovary ± densely pilose.
