Characteristics

Plants annual, 30-60 cm tall, glabrous. Stem erect, slender, long naked in lower part, branched in upper part. Leaves alternate and petiolate, uppermost leaves subverticillate, shortly petiolate or subsessile; petiole to 3 cm; leaf blade pale green abaxially, green adaxially, ovate or ovate-elliptic, 6-9 × 2.5-4.5 cm, membranous, lateral veins 5 or 6 pairs, base cuneate, margin densely crenate-serrate, teeth mucronulate, apex shortly acuminate. Inflorescences in upper leaf axils, 1-flowered; peduncles shorter than leaves, 4-6 cm. Pedicels ca. 4 cm, slender, bracteate above middle; bracts persistent, ovate-lanceolate, 4-5 mm, leathery, apex acuminate. Flowers pink, becoming purple when dry, 2.5-3 cm deep. Lateral sepals 2, lanceolate, 5-6 × 2.5-3 mm, membranous, base dilated and denticulate, apex mucronulate, abaxial midvein thickened, carinate. Lower sepal funnelform, 2-2.5 cm deep, narrowed into a curved spur; spur fibrous, 1-1.5 cm; mouth oblique, 7-8 mm, tip acute. Upper petal cucullate, cordate, abaxial midvein broadly carinate; lateral united petals not clawed, 0.7-2 cm, 2-lobed; basal lobes ovate; distal lobes broadly and obliquely ovate-orbicular, ca. 2 × as long as basal lobes; auricle orbicular. Filaments linear; anthers acute. Ovary fusiform, ca. 3 mm. Capsule linear, 2.5-3 cm. Seeds few, brown, oblong, 3-4 mm, smooth. Fl. Aug, fr. Sep-Oct.
