Characteristics

Plants annual, 40-50 cm tall, glabrous, roots many, fusiform, fibrous. Stem erect, slender, branched; branches spreading. Leaves alternate, shortly petiolate or sessile; petiole 2-3 cm; leaf blade gray-green or becoming purple abaxially, green adaxially, oblong or ovate-oblong, 3-4 × 1.5-3.5 cm, membranous, lateral veins (5 or)6-9 pairs, base rounded or cordate, margin shallowly crenate, rarely nearly entire, apex obtuse or acute. Inflorescences in upper leaf axils, 1-or 2-flowered; peduncles longer than petioles, 3-3.5 cm. Pedicels 1-1.5 cm, bracteate at middle or above; bracts persistent, linear-subulate, minute, 1-2 mm. Flowers yellowish, 2-2.5 cm deep. Lateral sepals 2, suborbicular or ovate-orbicular, 6-7 mm wide, rigid, 5-veined, apex mucronulate. Lower sepal red spotted, funnelform, 2-2.4 cm deep, narrowed into an incurved spur ca. 1/2 as long as limb; mouth vertical, tip acuminate. Upper petal saccate, orbicular, small, ca. 8 × 9 mm, apex hooked or rostellate, abaxial midvein thickened, cristate above middle, crista subtriangular or ligulate; lateral united petals ± clawed, 1.7-2 cm, 2-lobed; basal lobes oblong, apex obtuse; distal lobes dolabriform, longer, apex rounded; auricle inflexed, elongate. Filaments linear, short; anthers acute. Ovary erect, fusiform. Capsule linear, 1.5-2 cm. Fl. Aug-Sep, fr. Oct.
