Plants annual, 30-50 cm tall, glabrous. Stem erect, succulent, nodes swollen, with adventitious roots, simple or branched from base. Leaves often crowded in upper part of stem, alternate, petiolate, upper leaves shortly petiolate; leaf blade pale green abaxially, dark green adaxially, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 5-8 × 3-3.5 cm, membranous, lateral veins 6-8 pairs, spreading and curved, base cuneate or narrowed, margin crenate, teeth mucronulate, apex shortly acuminate. Inflorescences in upper leaf axils, (2 or)3-or 4-flowered; peduncles 3-4(-6) cm, slender. Pedicels 1-2 cm, slender, bracteate at base; bracts persistent, linear or linear-lanceolate, 1-5 mm, membranous. Flowers sulfur-colored, 1-1.5 cm deep. Lateral sepals 2, broadly ovate or orbicular, ca. 3 mm, apex shortly mucronulate. Lower sepal navicular; mouth vertical, ca. 7 mm, tip acute, base constricted into a slightly erect, incurved spur; spur cornute, 1-1.2 cm. Upper petal green, cucullate, orbicular, ca. 4 mm in diam., margin scarious, abaxial midvein thickened, 2-cornute-carinate; lateral united petals not clawed, ca. 9 mm, 2-lobed; basal lobes broadly obovate-orbicular or retuse; distal lobes broadly subobovate, ca. as long as basal lobes, abaxially or laterally denticulate, apex rounded. Filaments ligulate; anthers orbicular, apex acute. Ovary striate, fusiform. Capsule erect, narrowly clavate, 1-1.8 cm. Seeds few, ca. 6. Fl. and fr. Jul-Aug.
