Characteristics

Perennial herb 30–90 cm. tall; stems upright to decumbent, branching freely, ± pubescent.. Leaves opposite or in verticils of 3(–4); petiole (3–)5–15 mm. long, slender; lamina broadly ovate, (2.5–)3–5.5 cm. long, 1.5–3.2 cm. broad, the apex acuminate or acute, finely and sparsely pubescent above, glabrous or with a few hairs on the midrib and lateral veins beneath; margin ± finely serrate; lateral veins 5–6 pairs.. Flowers axillary, epedunculate, solitary or paired, red.. Bracts subulate, 6–7 mm. long, rather inconspicuous.. Pedicels 2.8–3.4 cm. long, slender, sparsely pubescent.. Lateral sepals ovate-lanceolate, ± 7 mm. long and 2.5 mm. broad, acute, the margin with a few hairs.. Lower sepal bucciniform, 13–14 mm. long, pubescent along the keel, somewhat curved and tapering into the spur, 31–33 mm. in length overall, 3-digitate at the tip, the lobes 6–9 mm. long, the central lobe straight whereas the outer 2 are slightly recurved.. Dorsal petal ± 10 mm. long and 8 mm. broad, cucullate, with a broad crest terminating in a short acute point, finely pubescent along the crest.. Lateral united petals ±17 mm. long; upper petal broadly ovate, 9 mm. long, 7 mm. broad, entire or slightly apiculate; lower petal ovate-lanceolate, 13 mm. long and 8 mm. broad, with a slight emargination distally along the inner margin..
