Characteristics

Plants annual, 60-80 cm tall, glabrous. Stem erect, robust, lower nodes swollen, with adventitious roots; branchlets spreading, short. Leaves alternate, subsessile; petiole with 1 pair of globose basal glands; leaf blade pale green or becoming purple when dry abaxially, dark green adaxially, lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, 8-19 cm, membranous, with few stipitate glands at base, lateral veins 6-8 pairs, mucronulate. Inflorescences often in upper leaf axils, subcorymbose, 3-5-flowered; peduncles shorter than leaves, 8-9 cm. Pedicels 1-1.5 cm, slender, bracteate at base; bracts caducous, ovate, 4-5 mm, apex acuminate. Flowers red, 2.5-3 cm deep. Lateral sepals 2, obliquely ovate-orbicular, ca. 5 × 3 mm, multiveined, apex acuminate. Lower sepal funnelform, limb 1.4-1.5 cm deep, narrowed into an incurved spur subequal to limb; mouth oblique, 1.3-1.5 cm wide, tip acute. Upper petal orbicular, 1-1.1 cm in diam., apex cuspidate, abaxial midvein thickened, cristate; lateral united petals not clawed, short, ca. 1.5 cm; basal lobes rounded; distal lobes semilunar, ca. 2 × as long as basal lobes, apex narrowed; auricle small. Filaments linear, ca. 3 mm; anthers small, apex obtuse. Ovary erect, fusiform. Capsule subcylindric, 1.5-2 cm. Seeds few, black, oblong, 4-5 mm. Fl. Jul-Aug, fr. Sep. 2n = 18*.
