Characteristics

Prostrate to erect annual herb 0.3-0.8 m tall. Stems yellowish-green, many-branched, angular, ribbed, arising from a taproot; sparsely to densely whitish strigose with appressed ± equally biramous hairs. Stipules 1-5 mm long, lanceolate-subulate, attenuate, ± erect. Leaves pinnately 3-9-foliolate; leaf axis 1.2-6.5 cm long including petiole of 2-26 mm, rachis usually prolonged 1-13 mm beyond lateral leaflets; stipels 0.5-1.5 mm long, falling early; terminal leaflet 12-50 x 1-5.5 mm, linear to narrowly lanceolate or elliptic-oblong, apex acute to rounded, laterals often smaller; lamina sparsely to densely strigose with appressed, ± equally biramous hairs on both surfaces. Raceme 1-18 cm long, sessile or with peduncle of 0.5-22 mm; bracts 1-1.5 mm long, falling early; pedicels 0.5-1 mm long. Calyx 2-4 mm long, strigose; tube 0.3-0.7 mm long, lobes subulate-setaceous, much longer than tube. Corolla 3.5-5.5 mm long, orange-carmine to red, back of standard whitish strigose; keel whitish strigose along distal margin, apex obtuse. Stamens 3-5 mm long, up to twice calyx length. Style 1-2.5 mm long, bending to ± erect in middle or at distal third. Pod 11-36 x 1.8-2.7 mm, reflexed, curved or straight, flat with a continuous midridge, sparsely to densely strigose; style-base persistent forming a beak from pod apex; endocarp without tannin deposits. Seeds 4-15, orange, flattened squarish-rectangular, 2-2.2 x 1.4-1.6 mm, tuberculate.
