Characteristics

Annual or perennial prostrate herb or suffrutex to 0.4 m tall. Stems many, sometimes rooting at lower nodes, ribbed at first becoming terete and longitudinally furrowed below, reddish-brown, strigillose-pubescent with ± equally biramous hairs spreading at tips or crisped, sparsely to moderately densely covered with 0.2-1 mm long, erect, yellowish or red gland-tipped multicellular hairs. Stipules 2-6(8) mm long, linear-attenuate to subulate-lanceolate, spreading or recurved. Leaves pinnately (3)5-11-foliolate; leaf axis (15)30-60 mm long including petiole of 6-20 mm, prolonged 1-4 mm beyond lateral leaflets; stipels 0.5-1 mm long, falling early; terminal leaflet 5-14(18) x 2.5-8.5 mm, obovate to elliptic, slightly broader than more elliptic laterals, to ± twice as long as wide, apicidate, ± sparsely strigose-pubescent with ± equally biramous hairs either appressed, spreading at tips or crisped, mixed small and larger hairs below; only margins of juvenile leaves occasionally with multicellular hairs. Raceme 2-17 cm long, ± equal to 3 times subtending leaf length, including peduncle of 10-33 mm, laxly to densely 20-80-flowered; bracts 1-4(5) mm long, linear-lanceolate to filiform, falling early; pedicels 0.5-1 mm long, spreading or subreflexed after anthesis. Calyx 2.5-5 mm long, ± densely strigose, pilose or subsericeous, sometimes with sparse gland-tipped multicellular hairs; lobes setaceous-subulate, 4-6 times tube length. Corolla 4-5.5 mm long, pink to carmine-red; back of standard whitish pubescent, distal keel margin pilose to subsericeous, keel apex obtuse. Stamens 3.5-4.5 mm long, exceeding or sometimes ± equal to calyx. Style 1.2-1.8 mm long, bent or curving to erect in upper two-thirds. Pod 6-14 x 1.5-2 mm, straight, subcylindrical, spreading, dark brown, densely strigose to pubescent with crisped hairs, sparsely to densely covered with erect, gland-tipped hairs to 0.3 mm long; style-base persistent forming a short beak; endocarp with conspicuous tannin spots. Seeds 2-8, 1-1.5 x 1-1.2 mm, quadrangular-cylindrical to globose, orange to brown, pitted.
