Perennial herb with prostrate or decumbent trailing stems 0.6-1 m long. Stem ± angular, sparsely strigose or glabrous, brown. Stipules 6-15 x 1.5-7 mm, obliquely ovate-acuminate, only one half being fully evident, base often cordate on leaf-opposed side, ± spreading, sparsely strigose to glabrous. Leaves digitately 3-foliolate, petiole 8-40 mm; terminal leaflet (8)11-32 x (4)6-20 mm, broadly elliptic to obovate, glabrous above, sparsely appressed strigose beneath. Raceme distantly many-flowered, 8-28 cm long, including erect peduncle of 5-24 cm; bracts 2-6 x 0.2-2 mm, lanceolate to ovate-acuminate; pedicels 0.5-1.5 mm long. Calyx 2-2.8 mm long, sparsely whitish strigose, drying blackish; lobes narrowly triangular, ± equal to tube. Stamens (3)4-5 mm long. Pod 18-24 x c. 1.5 mm. Seeds 6-8.
Perennial herb, up to 300 mm high; semi-erect, spineless, whole plant sparsely to densely pubescent. Leaves trifoliolate with large, foliar stipules up to 15 mm long; terminal leaflet obovate to narrowly obovate, up to 30 mm long. Flowers: inflorescence twice as long as leaves; corolla red; Oct.-Feb. Pods straight, narrow, glabrous.
