Characteristics

Erect annual herb 0.3-1 m tall, arising from a taproot. Stems laxly leafy, slender, angular, ribbed, yellow-green to reddish-brown; thinly appressed whitish strigose, hairs ± equally biramous; sometimes scattered with reddish pearl bodies. Stipules 2-3.5 mm long, subulate-setaceous, ± spreading. Leaves pinnately 5-11(13)-foliolate; leaf axis 0.9-3.5(4) cm long, including petiole of 0.5-5.5 mm, axis usually prolonged 2-4 mm beyond lateral leaflets, stipels absent; terminal leaflet 9-25 x 0.4-1.5(2) mm, linear-lanceolate, apex acute; leaflets whitish strigose with ± equally biramous hairs on both surfaces, sparsely so with tips sometimes spreading above, more coarsely and densely appressed strigose beneath with hairs of various sizes. Raceme 2-8 cm long, sparsely 3-15-flowered; peduncle of 1.8-4.8 cm, filiform; bracts 0.5-1.5 mm, subulate, usually falling early; pedicels 2-4.5 mm long. Calyx 2-3 mm long, sparsely to densely appressed strigose with ferrugineous or whitish hairs; lobes subulate, 1.5-2 mm long, tube 0.5-1 mm long. Corolla 4.5-6.5 mm long, back of standard densely strigose to pubescent with whitish or ferrugineous hairs. Stamens (4)4.5-6 mm long. Style 1-1.5 mm long, curving erect before middle, erect portion c. 1 mm long, remainder swelling to become a pod beak. Pod 20-28 x 1.6-2 mm, cylindrical, flattened, spreading to erect, sparsely to densely strigose with whitish hairs, apex with persistent forward-pointing beak; endocarp spotted with tannin deposits. Seeds 8-12, 1.6-2.2 x 1.4-1.8 mm, ± oblong, green to brown, pitted.
