Characteristics

Scrambling or ascending suffrutex, 0.3-1.0 m high; much-branched from woody rootstock; stems angular, strigose to glabrous. Stipules 1-3(4) mm long, subulate-falcate to setaceous. Leaves sometimes heteromorphic; petioles (3)5-24 mm long. Terminal leaflet (2)4-25 x 1.0-8.5 mm, cuneate-obovate or ± elliptic to oblanceolate, ± complicate, strigose above and below, apex rounded to acute. Inflorescences of 50-220 mm long, 20-40(60)-flowered racemes; pedicels 0.5-1.0 mm long. Flowers wine-red to orange-red; calyx 2.5-3.5 mm long, ± appressed strigose, lobes subulate-setaceous, ± equalling to 3 x tube length; standard crisped-pubescent dorsally, lamina dark purple; keel apex obtuse to acute. Stamens 4.5-6.0 mm long. Ovary densely strigose. Flowering time July-Jan. Pod 12-26 x 2.0-2.5 mm.
