Subspecies

Characteristics

Erect, bushy or straggling perennial herb or subshrub 0.2-1.2 m tall. Stems branching freely from a woody rootstock, or prolifically from secondary shoots on previous years growth; young stems ribbed, angular, ± compressed, greenish or yellowish-grey, often very densely strigose to hoary with ± appressed equally biramous hairs mixed with coarser hairs spreading at tips or crisped, ± densely hirsute to hispid with ± sessile to 5 mm, pale or dark, erect, gland-tipped multicellular hairs; older stems rigid, becoming woody, glabrescent; bark dark purplish-brown, longitudinally striate; plant viscid, strongly aromati c. Stipules (0.5)1-4(7) mm long, lanceolate to linear-attenuate or subulate, ascending to spreading-recurved. Leaves pinnately 5-13(17)-foliolate; leaf axis 5-30(43) mm long including petiole of (0.5)1-8(10) mm, mostly not prolonged beyond lateral leaflets or only to 1.5 mm; stipels absent; terminal leaflet (1)3-9(12) x (0.8)1-3.5 mm, often smaller than laterals, leaflets thickly textured, frequently folded, cuneate-oblanceolate to obovate, 1.5-4 times as long as wide, apex obtuse, rounded, truncate or emarginate, strongly apiculate, mostly strigose with ± appressed, equally biramous, similarly sized hairs above, sometimes spreading at tips, more densely and coarsely strigose beneath (mixed small and larger hairs); ± densely covered with bladder-like glands on leaf margins and lower surface, these sessile or shortly stalked. Raceme 2.5-18(23) cm long, not zigzag, arching to erect, 2-20 times subtending leaf length, including glandular peduncle of (2)8-30(55) mm, laxly 10-35(40)-flowered; bracts 1.5-3(4) x 0.1-1 mm long, lanceolate, narrowly triangular to linear-attenuate, ± hooded, falling early; pedicels 0.5-1.5 mm long. Calyx (2)2.5-4.5(6.5) mm long, including a 0.8-1.5 mm tube, greenish-yellow, ± densely strigose with ± appressed hairs, also with short-stalked gland-tipped hairs; lobes lanceolate to linear-attenuate, ± equal to 3 times tube length. Corolla 6-12 mm long, pink to orange or carmine-red; back of standard and distal keel margin minutely whitish puberulent, keel apex obtuse. Stamens (5)5.5-10(11) mm long, mostly more than twice calyx length. Style 3-4.5(5) mm long, horizontal to vertical length ratio 1:1.5-3. Ovary densely greyish strigillose to strigose, hairs ± appressed or spreading at tips, densely covered with short gland-tipped hairs. Pod (7)10-25(36) x 1-1.6 mm, straight, cylindrical, spreading to reflexed, reddish to brown with broad pale sutures, densely strigose with hairs ± crisped, sparsely to densely covered with erect, gland-tipped hairs to 0.5(1) mm long, style-base persistent forming a short beak; endocarp spotted with tannin deposits. Seeds (3)6-14, 1-1.5 x 1-1.2 mm, quadrangular-cylindrical, dark orange or brown, pitted.
