Characteristics

Softly-wooded shrub 0.7-2.5 in tall. Stems 3-4-angled or narrowly winged, densely strigillose, pubescent or pilose with whitish and often brown hairs, becoming dark brown, glabrescent, longitudinally striate, lenticellate below. Stipules 7-20 mm long, linear-lanceolate, attenuate, erect or spreading. Leaves pinnately (7)11-17(19)-foliolate; leaf axis (4)6-16 cm long, including petiole of 10-21(26) mm, up to 3 mm wide at base, 3-angled or narrowly winged, axis extended 3-14 mm beyond lateral leaflets; stipels 1-5.5 mm long, subulate-setaceous; terminal leaflet (19)21-43 x (11)14-25 mm, broadly ovate-elliptic, apex broadly acute, obtuse, rounded or truncate, laterals often larger, oblong-elliptic or ovate; leaflets sparingly strigillose on both surfaces, hairs ± equally biramous, diverging at 40-50° from midrib, sub-coriaceous. Raceme 6-28 cm long, including peduncle of 24-65 mm, very densely 70-160-flowered; bracts 4-8 mm long, lanceolate or linear-attenuate, mostly erect or spreading, not fully reflexed in distal half; pedicels 1.5-6 mm long. Calyx 1-2 mm long, densely brown strigillose; lobes broadly triangular, much shorter than tube. Corolla 8-9 mm long, crimson or coral-red, back of standard very densely strigose with closely appressed dark brown hairs. Stamens 6-8 mm long. Style 2-2.5 mm long, curving erect from thickened style-base. Pod 22-35(45) x c. 3 mm, cylindrical, sparsely strigillose or glabrous, tapering to upturned beak at apex, endocarp densely spotted with tannin deposits. Seeds 5-8, c. 2.5 x 2 mm, oblong, brown.
