Characteristics

Spreading annual herb 0.15-0.5 m tall. Stems prostrate to ascending, somewhat woody at base, divaricately many-branched, very sparsely strigillose or glabrous, dark reddish-brown, ± scattered with pearl bodies. Stipules 0.5-2 mm long, triangular to subulate, ± spreading. Leaves pinnately 5-11-foliolate; leaf axis 5-30 mm long, ± persistent, aggregations of dark pearl bodies often present at base of petiole and between leaflets, petiole of 3-7 mm, stipels absent; terminal leaflet 3.5-11 x 1.5-5.5 mm, oblanceolate to obovate or elliptic, glabrous above, sparsely appressed strigillose beneath. Raceme 2-8(10) cm long, peduncle of 11-40 mm; bracts c. 1 mm long, lanceolate to subulate, subpersistent or falling early; pedicels 1-2 mm long, slender. Calyx 1.5-2 mm long, very sparsely strigillose; lobes narrowly triangular to lanceolate, ± equal to tube. Corolla pink or deep red, back of standard whitish pubescent to strigose. Stamens 3-4 mm long. Pod (9)10-18 x 1.5-2.5 mm, ± spreading, oblong, constricted at intervals, glabrous; endocarp ± spotted with tannin vescicles, mostly restricted to transverse septa. Seeds 5-8, 1.5-2.5 x c. 1.5 mm, ± oblong-squarish, greenish-brown, rugose, mottled, not pitted.
