Angiosperms > Fabales > Fabaceae > Indigofera

Characteristics

Erect or spreading perennial herb or suffrutex 0.2-0.6 m tall, rhizomatous. Stems branching freely from a woody rootstock, or from secondary shoots on previous years growth; young stems ribbed, angular, greenish-canescent, often very densely strigillose to strigose with ± closely appressed, equally biramous hairs, mixed sometimes with coarser hairs spreading at tips; sparsely scattered with 0.1-0.6 mm long, gland-tipped, thickish multicellular hairs, or these lacking; older stems rigid, becoming woody, glabrescent, bark dark reddish-brown, longitudinally striate. Stipules (0.6)1-2.5 mm long, narrowly triangular to subulate, ascending to spreading-recurved. Leaves pinnately (3)5-7(9)-foliolate; leaf axis 2-10(17) mm long including petiole of (0.5)1-4.5 mm, mostly not prolonged beyond lateral leaflets or only to 0.5 mm; stipels absent; terminal leaflet 2.5-8.5 x (0.8)1-3(4) mm, ± similar to laterals, frequently folded, cuneate-oblanceolate to obovate-oblong, 2-3 times as long as wide, apex rounded, truncate or emarginate, often recurved; sparsely to densely strigillose to strigose on both surfaces, hairs closely appressed, equally biramous, similarly sized above, often more coarsely and densely strigose beneath (mixed small and larger hairs), glandular hairs lacking, often darker above than beneath. Raceme 3-10(12) cm long, not zigzag, arching to erect, 3-15 times length of subtending leaf, including peduncle of 5-17(22) mm, laxly (8)10-20(30)-flowered; bracts c. 1 mm long, shortly lanceolate-cucullate, ± falling early; pedicels 0.5-1.5 mm long. Calyx 1.5-2.5(3) mm long, including a tube 0.7-1.2 mm long, ± densely strigillose to strigose or canescent with ± appressed hairs, gland-tipped hairs absent; lobes lanceolate to subulate, ± equal to tube. Corolla 6-7 mm long, pink to orange or carmine-red; back of standard and distal keel margin finely ± appressed pubescent, keel apex obtuse. Stamens (4.5)5-7 mm long, mostly more than twice calyx length. Style 2-2.5(3) mm long, horizontal to vertical length ratio 1:1-1:3. Ovary densely canescent, hairs closely appressed. Pod 11-20 x c. 1.5 mm, straight, cylindrical, spreading to reflexed, reddish to brown with broad pale sutures, finely appressed pubescent, glandular hairs absent; style-base persistent forming a short beak; endocarp spotted with tannin deposits. Seeds 3-10, 1-1.5 x 1-1.2 mm, quadrangular-cylindrical, dark orange or brown, slightly pitted.
