Characteristics

Erect annual or bushy to scrambling perennial herb to subshrub 0.4-1.5 m tall. Stems often woody, subprostrate to erect, diffuse, ribbed at first becoming terete below, reddish, strigillose to pubescent, with minute ± appressed biramous hairs mixed with coarser hairs spreading at tips or crisped, often sparsely to densely covered with erect, yellowish or red multicellular hairs to 4 mm, not or minutely gland-tipped; plant usually viscid. Stipules 1.5-4(5) mm long, linear-lanceolate to subulate-setaceous, erect or spreading. Leaves pinnately 3-9(11)-foliolate; leaf axis 2-35 mm long including petiole of 0.5-7(9) mm, usually prolonged 0.5-4.5 mm beyond lateral leaflets; stipels 0.5-1 mm long, falling early; terminal leaflet 2-12(16) x 1.2-7(9) mm, slightly larger than laterals, elliptic-oblong to obovate, mostly ± twice as long as wide, often markedly apiculate, sparsely strigillose to densely strigose-pubescent above, with ± equally and unequally biramous hairs appressed or spreading at tips, more coarsely strigose beneath (mixed small and large hairs); only margins of juvenile leaves occasionally scattered with multicellular hairs. Raceme 1-7(12) cm long, ± equal to 3 or more times subtending leaf length, including slender peduncle of 3-15(20) mm, laxly 6-20(30)-flowered; bracts 1-2 mm long, linear-lanceolate or subulate, falling early; pedicels 0.5-1.5 mm long. Calyx 2-4(5) mm long, ± densely strigillose to strigose-pubescent, sometimes with multicellular or gland-tipped hairs; lobes setaceous-subulate, (4)5-8(9) times tube length. Corolla 4-5.5 mm long, pink to carmine-red; back of standard and distal keel margin whitish pubescent, keel apex obtuse. Stamens (2.5)3-4.5(5) mm long, ± equal to or exceeding calyx. Style 2.8-3.5 mm long, ± abruptly bent to erect for distal third. Pod 5-14 x 1.5-2 mm, straight, cylindrical, spreading, whitish strigose to pubescent with hairs spreading at tips, reddish to dark brown, sparsely to densely covered with erect, sometimes gland-tipped hairs to 0.5 mm long; style-base persistent forming a short beak; endocarp flecked with tannin deposits but not in conspicuous spots. Seeds 2-6, 1-1.5 x 1-1.2 mm, quadrangular-cylindrical to globose, khaki, yellow, orange or brown, shiny, not pitted.
