Characteristics

Low, ascending to erect, virgate suffrutex 0.2-1(1.5) m tall, arising from a woody rootstock. Stems and leaves rush-like; young stems slightly furrowed, greenish, glabrous or strigose with ± appressed, equally biramous hairs, gland-tipped multicellular hairs absent, older stems becoming woody, glabrescent, bark dark reddish-brown, longitudinally striate. Leaves often fascicled, arising from short-shoots. Stipules c. 0.5 mm long, scale-like, narrowly triangular. Lateral leaflets absent or vestigial, petiole-leaf axis 10-80 mm long, persistent, becoming needle-like after terminal leaflet drops; stipels c. 0.5 mm long, falling early; terminal leaflet 1.5-12(14) x 1-4.5 mm, falling early, oblong to oblanceolate, 1.5-4(5) times as long as wide, apex rounded or obtuse, sparsely strigose on both surfaces with appressed, equally biramous, similar-sized hairs. Raceme 1-4 cm long, arching to erect, ± equal to subtending leaf, including peduncle of 2-10 mm, laxly (7)10-20(35)-flowered; bracts c. 1 mm long, shortly lanceolate-hooded, ± falling early; pedicels 0.5-1 mm long. Calyx 1-1.5 mm long, strigose with ± appressed hairs, lobes lanceolate to subulate, ± equal to twice tube length. Corolla 4-4.5 mm long, red, back of standard and distal keel margin ± appressed to spreading whitish pubescent, keel apex obtuse to acute. Stamens 2.5-3 mm long. Style c. 1 mm long, curving erect from pod apex. Ovary sparsely strigose, hairs closely appressed. Pod 12-28 x 1.5-2 mm, straight, cylindrical, spreading, reddish to brown with broad pale sutures, sparsely strigose, glabrescent; style-base persistent forming a short beak; endocarp densely spotted with tannin deposits. Seeds (4)5-12, 1.5-2 x 1-1.5 mm, quadrangular-cylindrical, greenish to dark orange or brown, not pitted.
