Characteristics

Rounded small shrub, perennial or annual herb 0.3-1.5 m tall. Stems erect, spreading or prostrate, reddish, laxly many-branched, slender, whitish pubescent to pilose and sparsely to densely brown hirsute with subsimple spreading or ascending hairs. Stipules 2-7 mm long, linear-lanceolate to setose. Leaves pinnately 5-9(11)-foliolate; leaf axis 15-50 mm long, including petiole of 3-14 mm, stipels present or absent; terminal leaflet (5)10-24(30) x (2)4-11 mm, narrowly elliptic, oblong or obovate, softly whitish pilose with unequally biramous hairs or glabrous above, pilose beneath. Racemes 2-19 cm long including peduncle of 8-38(50) mm; bracts 1.5-5 mm long, linear-lanceolate; pedicels 1-1.5 mm long. Calyx 2-4(5) mm long, pilose or stiffly hirsute with whitish and brown hairs; lobes setaceous, 2-5 times as long as tube. Corolla reddish or pink, back of standard whitish pubescent, sometimes with darker hairs along midrib near apex; keel apex obtuse, whitish pubescent or stiffly setose with brown hairs along the distal midline. Stamens 3-5 mm long, mostly longer than calyx; anthers with hairs above and below. Pod 6-10 x 2-3 mm, ± spreading, elliptic-oblong, densely pilose or villous with soft whitish hairs and setose with stiff dark hairs; endocarp with large tannin vescicles. Seeds 2-5, 1.4-1.8 x 1-1.5 mm, squarish, grey-green, deeply pitted.

Filaments crimson, 4–4.5 mm. long.. Style ± 3.5 mm. long, curved through more than 90° about 2.5 mm. from the base; stigma depressed-globose, about twice as wide as the style.. Pod elliptic-oblong, 7–8 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, 3 mm. thick, setose both with soft white hairs and fewer stiffer blackish hairs; endocarp strongly spotted.. Seeds 2, grey, ± cuboid, deeply pitted.
