Species

Angiosperms > Fabales > Fabaceae > Indigofera

Characteristics

Erect, bushy or straggling perennial herb or subshrub 0.3-0.8 m tall. Stems branching freely from a woody rootstock, erect, ascending or decumbent, young stems ribbed, angular to terete, reddish-green, sparsely to densely strigose with ± appressed, equally biramous hairs, sometimes spreading at tips, densely covered with 0.1-0.5 mm, pale gland-tipped multicellular hairs; older stems becoming woody, glabrescent, longitudinally striate; plant viscid. Stipules 1-6.5 mm long, lanceolate to linear-attenuate, ± recurved. Leaves pinnately (5)11-17(19)-foliolate, subopposite, sometimes with an odd leaflet near base, dark pearl bodies clustered around base of leaflets; leaf axis (15)30-85 mm long including petiole of 1.5-10 mm, prolonged 1.5-8 mm beyond lateral leaflets; stipels absent; terminal leaflet (7)10-22 x 3.5-9 mm, ± similar to laterals, frequently folded, obovate-cuneate to oblong-elliptic, 1.5-3 times as long as wide, apex obtuse to rounded, strigose with ± appressed, equally biramous, similarly sized hairs above (often restricted to near margins), more densely and evenly strigose beneath (mixed small and larger hairs); ± densely vesciculate glandular on leaf margins and lower surface, either sessile or shortly stalked. Raceme 7-25(36) cm long, not zigzag, sharply ascending or arching to erect, 2-5 times length of subtending leaf, including glandular peduncle of 10-45(60) mm, laxly to densely 15-45(70)-flowered; bracts 1.5-3 mm long, subulate, falling early; pedicels 1-2 mm long, ascending. Calyx 2-3 mm long, including a tube 1-1.5 mm long, greenish-yellow, strigose with ± appressed hairs, densely covered with short-stalked, gland-tipped hairs; lobes triangular to lanceolate, + equal to twice tube length. Corolla 9-12 mm long, pink to orange or carmine-red; back of standard and distal keel margin pubescent-strigillose with ± appressed hairs, also densely glandular, keel apex obtuse. Stamens (7)8-11 mm long, more than twice calyx length. Style 3-4.5(5) mm long, horizontal to vertical length ratio 1:1-1:2. Ovary densely greyish strigose, hairs ± appressed or spreading at tips. Pod 14-30 x 1.5-3(4) mm, straight, cylindrical, ascending to spreading, reddish-brown with broad pale sutures, sparsely strigose with hairs spreading at tips or ± crisped, densely covered with yellowish gland-tipped hairs to 0.5 mm long; style-base persistent forming a short beak; endocarp spotted with tannin deposits. Seeds 7-16, 1-1.5 x 1-1.2 mm, quadrangular-cylindrical, orange or brown, immature.
