Characteristics

Hard-wooded small tree, lax bushy shrub or suffrutex (0.5)0.8-5 m tall. Stems slender, terete or ribbed, whitish strigillose, pubescent or shortly villous, sometimes with scattered pearl bodies and brownish subsimple bristle-like hairs above, becoming glabrous, brown to grey, longitudinally striate, fissured, lenticellate below. Stipules 4-12 mm long, linear-attenuate or setaceous, ± erect. Leaves pinnately (5)7-15(17)-foliolate, soon deciduous; leaf axis 2.2-11(12) cm long, including petiole of 7-24 mm, extended 4-15 mm beyond lateral leaflets; stipels 1-3 mm long, subulate-setaceous; terminal leaflet (10)16-37(45) x (6)8-20(25) mm, obovate or elliptic to ovate, apex acute, obtuse or rounded, laterals somewhat narrower; leaflets chartaceous, sparsely strigillose-pubescent with whitish hairs on both surfaces, sometimes denser beneath with brown hairs, hairs often unequally biramous, spreading, diverging at 10-45° to midrib. Raceme 3-8(14) cm long, including peduncle of 2-8(14) mm, densely (30)40-l00-flowered; bracts 2.5-4 mm long, linear-acuminate or subulate; pedicels 0.5-1 mm long. Calyx 1.5-2.2 mm long, densely strigose to tomentose with brown and/or whitish hairs; lobes narrowly triangular to subulate, ± equal to tube. Corolla 5-6 mm long, greenish-red, back of standard sparsely to densely strigose with brown or ferrugineous, appressed to spreading hairs. Stamens 4-4.5 mm long. Style 1.5-2 mm long curving erect from swollen style-base on upturned apex of developing pod. Pod 16-30 x up to 2 mm, cylindrical to 4-angled, densely whitish strigillose-pubescent, endocarp densely spotted with tannin deposits. Seeds 4-6, 2.5-3 x 1.5-2 mm, oblong, brown.
