Characteristics

Virgate herb or subshrub, 0.3-2.0 m high; stems from a woody rootstock or taproot, angular, ribbed, ± densely appressed strigose, pearl bodies isolated. Stipules 1.5-3.0 mm long, subulate. Leaves pinnately 3-7-foliolate, rachis (7)10-42 mm long, leaflet pairs mostly (3.5)4.0-13.0 mm apart; petioles 3-13 mm long. Terminal leaflet (11)16-42 x 1-10 mm, linear to oblong-elliptic, apex acute to rounded; appressed strigillose, paler green above, appressed strigose beneath. Inflorescences of (50)70-180 mm long, spikelike (20)40-80-flowered racemes; peduncle 24-70 mm long; pedicels 3.5-9.0 mm long. Flowers 6-7 mm long, red; calyx 2-3 mm long, strigose; lobes triangular-lanceolate, ± equalling to twice tube length; standard densely ferruginous to dark brown strigose dorsally; keel apex obtuse. Stamens 5-6 mm long. Flowering time Nov.-June. Pod 20-35 x 2.0-2.5 mm.
