Characteristics

Perennial herb with a basal rosette and an erect flowering stem 0.7–1.2 m high, unbranched except for the inflorescence; stem brown scabrid-pubescent.. Leaves obovate, the basal ones to 68 cm long and 12 cm wide, the cauline ones 5–27 cm long, 3–12 cm wide, base attenuate in the proximal leaves, the more distal ones auriculate and semi-amplexicaul, margins dentate to almost entire, apex obtuse, scabrid-pilose above with tubercle-based hairs, hirsute-tomentellous beneath.. Capitula 8–15 mm long, heterogamous, in fairly dense corymbs; stalks of individual capitula 2–5 mm long; phyllaries deep brown, broadly ovate (outermost) to linear, 3–12 mm long, >2 mm wide, margins often erose, acute, pubescent, the inner ciliate.. Florets dark brown; outer florets few, tube cylindric, 4.3–5.5 mm long, lobes 0.3 mm long, style 5.5–6.7 mm long; inner florets tubular to narrowly infundibuliform, tube 4.5–6 mm long, lobes 0.5–0.8 mm long, glandular and sparsely pilose; anthers yellow, 3 mm long, at length much exserted; style 6–7.5 mm long.. Achenes cylindric, 1.7–3 mm long, glabrous; pappus white to reddish, 3–5 mm long.
