Characteristics

Shrublet 0.5–1 m high; stems glabrous.. Leaves strongly aromatic, elliptic or obovate, petiole 2–5 mm long, blade 0.5–4 cm long, 0.4–3 cm wide, base cuneate to attenuate, margins spiny-dentate, the teeth gland-tipped, apex obtuse or spiny-dentate, glabrous but for a few glandular hairs near the base.. Capitula 8–13 mm long, solitary on branchlets, forming lax leafy corymbs; stalks of individual capitula 1–2 mm long but seeming much longer; phyllaries whitish with green midrib, lanceolate, 2–8 mm long, margins membranous and slightly erose to ciliate, acute, glabrous; receptacle with low erose ridges or protuberances.. Florets yellowish or purple, 10–15, all hermaphrodite, tube cylindric from a widened base, 6.5–7.1 mm long, lobes 0.5–0.6 mm long, anthers 3.1–3.2 mm long, style 8–8.3 mm long.. Achenes cylindric, 2–2.4 mm long, villous with stiff hairs to 1.5 mm long, glandular; pappus 7.5–8.5 mm long.. Fig. 63 (page 331).
