Characteristics

Perennial, twining, subshrubby herb; stems covered with spreading or reflexed bristly hairs.. Leaf-blade orbicular-reniform or ovate, 7.5–12 cm. long and wide, obtuse at the apex, cordate at the base, glabrous or minutely scaly above, very densely covered with adpressed bristly hairs beneath; petiole 2–15 cm. long, bristly hairy.. Flowers several in ± dense to lax, often trifid cymes; peduncle bristly hairy, 7–19 cm. long; pedicels and secondary peduncles 2–20 mm. long; bracts small, oblong-lanceolate, 4 mm. long, 1 mm. wide.. Sepals rigid, sometimes with reflexed tips, oblong or lanceolate, 8.5–12 mm. long, 2–4 mm. wide, acute or acuminate at the apex, closely imbricate, strigose-pubescent.. Corolla white or pale mauve with a purple centre, funnel-shaped, 4–6 cm. long, densely strigose-pilose.. Unripe capsule white, ovoid, quite unlike that in apparently related species, narrowed to a neck below and also narrowed above to the pointed apex, 3 cm. long, 1.7 cm. wide; diameter at basal neck 5.5–6.5 mm.. Seeds oblong-ovoid, bluntly 3-angled, curiously like a spider’s body, dark brown, 10 mm. long, 6 mm. wide, glabrous save for a short but conspicuous tuft of golden hairs near the hilum.
