Ischyrodon lepturus (Taylor) Schelpe

Species

Bryophytes > Hypnales > Fabroniaceae > Ischyrodon

Characteristics

Shining, yellow, exceedingly variable in general appearance, normally with prostrate extension stems 1-2 inches long, having homomallous leaves and closely set with ovoid erect stems, often tapering to the point, closely leaved all round; the leaves numerous, imbricate, appressed when dry, erecto-patent when moist, 1-5 mm long, ovate-acuminate, concave, somewhat cordate at the base; the apex either shortly pointed or shortly hair-pointed; the nerve wide, extending about half-way or more, narrow above, wide below; the margin entire and erect, especially inflexed about mid-leaf, the lower part of the margin on one side sometimes reflexed; the cells widely linear, 100 x 10 µ; the basal cells very numerous, lax, pellucid, quadrate, 20 x 20 µ, extending one-third of the leaf-length along the sides and for a few cells up at the nerve, but suddenly differentiated; all cells sometimes green and chlorophyllose/more frequently empty and pellucid; but variations occur having these same general characters, but with pendulous, yellowish, slender, silky, extension stems 2-3 inches long, with few, scattered, yellowish, short, acute branches near the base, lightly clad in aristate leaves all round the stem, and not unlike a Brachythecium. Apparently dioecious. The perichaetia are very small, bud-like, and set on the main stem; the leaves shorter and wider than other leaves, sheathing, shortly brought to a point, entire or with a few big teeth; cells linear-rhomboid, and nerve absent; archegonia about six; seta 1/2 inch long; capsule oval; teeth in pairs, widely lanceolate, erect, laxly trabeculate, and closely papillose.
More
Plants yellow to bright-green, soft, shiny. Leaves lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate. long-acuminate, plane to slightly concave; costa ending about midleaf; upper cells long-rhomboidal, straight to slightly flexuose; alar cells quadrate to subquadrate. Perichaetial leaves erect, oblong, strongly shouldered with a few coarse teeth above; costa ending about midleaf or below, sometimes absent; cells long-rhomboidal above, oblong below, thin walled. Setae elongate, reddish, twisted. Capsules erect, cylindric, yellow-brown to reddish; operculum conic; exostome lanceolate, ca. 350 µm long, light yellow, transversely papillose (obscurely cross-striolate) below, then becoming randomly and evenly papillose in the middle and apically with larger and fewer papillae (i.e., virtually identical in sculpturing to J. seminervis), lamellae poorly-developed, scarcely projecting; endostome almost colorless, smooth, basal membrane low, slightly pleated, segments narrow, keeled, perforate, slightly shorter than and alternating with the teeth. Spores 10-12 µm in diameter. Calyptrae unknown.
